Next year will be a busy year for me from a tutoring perspective. I’ve been booked to lead five courses, four of which have been outlined so far.
21st to 23rd February - Fishguard: Get Your Non-Fiction Book Written & Published
The first one, is the ever-fabulous Writers Holiday Fishguard Winter Weekend in Fishguard (funnily enough!). There I shall be running a course on getting your non-fiction book written, and published. Whether you’re writing memoir, travel, a how-to self-help guide, local history, or even humour, this course will explore how to develop your idea into a non-fiction book, identifying productivity strategies to get it written. Then we’ll consider which is best for your idea: the traditional publishing route, or the self-publishing option? Find out how to develop a proposal for a traditional publisher, and what a publishing contract looks like. Discover the freedom of self-publishing and the various platforms you can use. Learn how to create a publicity package to promote your self-published or traditionally published book. Finally, sit back and watch the royalties flow in!
3rd to 5th April - Cirencester: Make Your Travel Pay
Run on behalf of Relax and Write, Make Your Travel Pay is designed for those who’ve always wanted to write travel articles, but don’t know how to start. We’ll look at what makes a travel article engaging, and how to you excite your reader, rather than patronize them. We’ll examine how to get several travel pieces (or more) from one trip, where to find potential markets, as well as exploring all those other travel options like photos, rights and press trips.
12th to 14th June - Cirencester: Nature Writing
Another course for Relax and Write, Nature Writing is all about capturing the world around us. Whether you write about animals, plants, landscape, travel, memoir, local history, or poetry, capturing the world around us is important. From learning how to be more observant, through to choosing the right words to describe what we see, this course will help you see more of the world around you, and capture it in your writing.
8th to 14th August - Swanwick (The Hayes): The Complete Article Writer
I’m delighted to announce that I’ve been booked to run one of the specialist courses at the annual Swanwick Writers Summer School. I’ll be running my popular and practical The Complete Article Writer course, as a series of four one-hour workshops. This course is for any writer of any skill level. It’s designed to help you gain an understanding of writing for the magazine market, and how to improve your chances of selling your ideas to editors.
(Note, booking for this doesn’t open until 1st February 2020.)
DETAILS SOON: 16th to 18th October - Cirencester: Penning Your Pets
I’m still working out the format of the course for this one, but it’s another course for Relax and Write, which will look at how to draw upon your pets for inspiration. Well, after writing One Hundred Ways For A Dog To Train Its Human and several other dog books, I’ll reveal my tips and tricks for making the most out of your mutt, or cat, or goldfish, or iguana, or whatever pet you might keep!
So, that’s part of what’s keeping me busy next year. Perhaps I’ll see you at one of them!
May I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope 2020 is a productive and successful for everybody!
